da large format edition
first time holding my new large format camera the crown graphics. it came with a 135mm lens which is a 35mm equivalent of like 45mm.........
each shot of large format 4x5 film is a whole sheet of film, 4 inches by 5 inches. a larger negative allows for a distinct look, usually more extreme depths of field ,and really really good quality. also a learning curve and expensive film but... been kind of focusing in on that, and developing, and printing in the future.
these were testing the film holders for any light leaks. you put two sheets of film into the holder at a time. I sent these to indie photo for developing. im sure there is easier ways to test this information but I was also excited to use it,
beauty shot and cat under a moving blanket as a dark cloth. which you use to better see the ground glass to focus the lens. then you put the film holder into the camera, take out the dark slide, set aperture and shutter speed, and press the shutter. you can then replace the dark slide in the film holder and take it out of the camera.
I think these were the like first shots I took knowing it would come out.
had my mamiya 645 die on me a few months ago so I traded the whole kit in for a 300mm lens for this bad boy. thats like an 100mm equivalent. learned that 300mm means the lens has to be atleast 30cm away from the ground glass to be able to focus on anything.
took it out to the beach in NJ one day it was so windy, i also took it to nahant. these negatives I developed myself. there were a lot of others ones that just did not come out at all... that will be detailed in a second
so these photos up to this point came from the same box of film which came with 25 sheets of film. so roughly half of them produced an image worth scanning. The rooftop photo below and the one of the tree above are my first trys with a new flash for this camera as well. rooftop did not work at all, i have since read the manual for the flash
I then got a box of 10 color sheets to try and take 10 photos of ‘things’ around philly. its for a proposal for film photographers where they give you a bunch of film if they pick your project. I took these two to a lab in new york that that proposal uses to get them developed. It just so happens they had the most afforable and convient color developing and scanning prices.
not wanting to be too precious and still use the camera and still use the darkroom i got a slightly nicer box of black and white film. I took these on a trip to maine with cat to look at wedding venues and do some camping. I have only developed 6 of these, but there are still more! and these still have developing issues. but its fun to alwasy learn more. I started keeping a notebook for each shot too. zach and lizzy 2 first developed succesful use of flash. those light leaks on that photo and the one of haley came from not using a part of the developing tank when developing.
welp i hope you enjoyed learnign about my expericne with large format.. i will leave you with an image of a very nice box of film for sale.
